Starting May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act goes into full effect. If you’re planning any domestic air travel or need access to certain federal facilities, a REAL ID-compliant identification will be required. At JMart Travels, we want to make sure our clients and followers are well-prepared for this transition. Here’s everything you need to know about REAL ID: what it is, how to get it, and what happens if you don’t have one.

What Is the REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a federal standard for identification that was established by Congress in 2005 to enhance security. A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card is marked with a star in the upper corner. Without it, starting May 7, 2025, you won’t be able to:

  • Board domestic flights within the United States.

  • Enter certain federal buildings or facilities.

  • Access nuclear power plants.

This is part of an effort to make identification more secure and reduce identity fraud.

How Do You Get a REAL ID?

Getting a REAL ID is relatively straightforward, but it does require an in-person visit to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent office in your state. To ensure a smooth process, bring the following documents with you:

  1. Proof of Identity: This could be a valid passport or birth certificate.

  2. Proof of Social Security Number: A Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with your Social Security number.

  3. Proof of Residency: Two documents such as utility bills, lease agreements, or bank statements showing your current address.

  4. Name Change Documentation (if applicable): If your current name doesn’t match your proof of identity, bring documents like a marriage certificate or court order.

Pro Tip: Check your state’s DMV website for specific requirements, as these can vary.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?

If you don’t have a REAL ID by May 7, 2025, you will need an alternative form of TSA-approved identification to board domestic flights. This includes:

  • A valid passport.

  • A U.S. military ID.

  • Other federally recognized forms of identification.

Without any of these, you will be denied boarding for your flight, which could disrupt your travel plans.

Why You Should Act Now

The deadline may seem far off, but DMVs are expected to experience long lines and increased demand as the date approaches. Avoid the rush and ensure your travel plans go smoothly by applying for your REAL ID well in advance.
