As winter's chill blankets the city in a sparkling white embrace, New York City transforms into a mesmerizing wonderland, offering a holiday experience like no other. OK, so maybe there wasn't a blanket of snow per se, but those 40 minutes the flakes were flying certainly took the festive atmosphere to a new level!
From the dazzling lights adorning iconic landmarks to the festive energy pulsating through the streets, a trip to the Big Apple during the holiday season is nothing short of enchanting. If you're ready to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, pack your bags and let's dive into the magical atmosphere awaiting you in New York City.
Recently, me and 100 or so of my now closest friends made the trip via bus from Lewisport, KY through the mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. You just can't beat getting dropped off and picked up in the heart of the city leaving the worry of grabbing an uber or the expense of those rare parking spaces likely miles away from what you want to see. Below are some of the highlights from our journey!
Radio City Music Hall and the Spectacular Rockettes Show: Our journey begins at the illustrious Radio City Music Hall, a beacon of entertainment that takes on a whole new dimension during the holidays. The exterior is adorned with lights that dance in harmony with the festive melodies echoing through the air. As you step inside, the grandeur of the hall envelops you, setting the stage for the mesmerizing Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The backstage tour outlines the history of this iconic entertainment institution and showcases a storied cast of performers through almost an entire century!
The holiday Rockettes Show is a symphony of precision, grace, and pure enchantment. The Rockettes, with their impeccable choreography, bring classic holiday tales to life in a spectacle that transcends entertainment. The stage comes alive with scenes of festive cheer, transporting you into a world where the magic of the season unfolds before your eyes. The awe-inspiring performances, coupled with the breathtaking set design, make this show a quintessential part of your New York City holiday experience. And new this year the show not only includes projections across the vast arched ceiling, but drones - "frost fairies" -are now part of the show!
Times Square's Electric Energy: As our journey continues, we find ourselves amidst the bustling energy of Times Square. Known as the crossroads of the world, Times Square takes on a new dimension during the holiday season. The colossal digital billboards, usually alive with advertisements, transform into vibrant canvases that paint the town with a kaleidoscope of colors.
The air is charged with excitement as locals and visitors alike come together to revel in the festivities. Street performers entertain the crowds, and the energy of the city is infectious. Take a moment to gaze up at the dazzling lights, capturing the essence of the holidays in the city that never sleeps.
Macy's on 34th Street: No holiday journey through New York City is complete without a visit to the world-renowned Macy's on 34th Street. Stepping into the store is like entering a holiday fairy tale. The enchanting window displays tell stories of wonder and joy, capturing the imagination of young and old alike. Inside, the grandeur of the holiday decorations creates an atmosphere of pure magic.
For those more serious shoppers (if any of you reading this happen to have an Aunt "Brenda", you know the type), you'll love finding the escalators on the seventh, eighth and ninth floors are the original WOODEN escalators. I may or may not know this from first hand experience. :)
Make your way to Santaland, where the young and young-at-heart can meet Santa Claus in a setting straight out of a storybook. The joyous atmosphere, coupled with the delightful holiday shopping experience, makes Macy's on 34th Street an essential stop on your New York City holiday itinerary. You'll need to make a reservation for this in advance as this is not your run of the mill shopping mall Santa. No no no - Macy's 34th Street Santa is the real deal!
Rockefeller Center's Glittering Tree and Ice Skating Rink: As we venture further, the iconic Rockefeller Center beckons with its majestic Christmas tree. Towering over the city, the tree is adorned with thousands of lights that twinkle like stars against the night sky. You've likely seen televised The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony which is a momentous occasion, marking the official start of the holiday season in New York City.
The adjacent ice skating rink invites you to glide under the shadow of towering skyscrapers, surrounded by the festive charm of the season. The air is filled with laughter and the clinks of skates on ice, creating a magical atmosphere that defines the holidays in the city.
Bryant Park's Winter Village: For a more intimate and European-inspired experience, our journey takes us to Bryant Park's Winter Village. Nestled in the heart of Manhattan, this charming oasis transforms into a winter wonderland during the holidays. The park is adorned with sparkling lights, and the air is filled with the aroma of spiced hot cocoa and roasted chestnuts among the dozens and dozens of food kiosks and there are also a few bars serving all of your most favorite holiday cocktails!
Stroll through the rows of quaint shops offering unique gifts and handcrafted treasures. The outdoor ice skating rink, surrounded by the backdrop of the city skyline, invites you to join in the joyous revelry. Bryant Park's Winter Village is a haven of festive delights, where every moment feels like a scene from a holiday postcard.
Culinary Adventures in Little Italy and Chinatown: No journey through New York City is complete without indulging in its diverse culinary offerings. Head to the charming streets of Little Italy, where the air is filled with the scent of freshly baked cannoli and hearty pasta dishes. The festive decorations and the warm hospitality of the local establishments create an atmosphere of pure joy.
Just a short stroll away, Chinatown invites you to explore a world of flavors. Bustling markets and authentic eateries offer delectable dishes that warm the soul. The juxtaposition of these two vibrant neighborhoods adds a layer of cultural richness to your holiday adventure.
One World Trade Center's Resilience and Hope: As our journey nears its end, we pause for a moment of reflection at One World Trade Center. The solemn beauty of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum serves as a poignant reminder of the city's resilience and the indomitable spirit of its people. Pay your respects to the heroes and find inspiration in the city's ability to rise, rebuild, and celebrate life.
Street Fare Like Nothing You'd Get at the County Fair: No trip to New York City is complete without a visit to some of the hundreds upon hundreds of carts situated at just about any street corner in sight. At home, if someone offers you a hot dog you likely say "no thank you". Take that same food though and place it in the heart of the city and somehow it's now a delicacy you can not resist.
St. Patrick's Cathedral's Tranquil Grandeur: Our final stop on this magical journey is the majestic St. Patrick's Cathedral. Located on Fifth Avenue, this iconic landmark is a sanctuary of tranquility amid the bustling city. Adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations, the cathedral exudes a sense of grandeur and peace.
Step inside to marvel at the stunning architecture and soak in the serenity of the space. We were fortunate to attend daily Mass and got to take a moment to reflect on the beauty that surrounded us. St. Patrick's Cathedral is a fitting end to our New York City holiday adventure, offering a sense of spiritual connection in the midst of the season's festivities.
In conclusion, New York City during the holiday season is a sensory feast, a journey through enchantment that promises to be a highlight of your travel experiences.
